We're celebrating winning a prestigious HRS Hotel Excellence award.

We fought off competition from around the UK in the HRS Hotel Excellence Awards to win the top Award for 'Excellent Social Responsibility - Independent Hotels' for our innovative policies toward local ethical sourcing, environmental protection and energy conservation.

Speaking at the award ceremony held at One whitehall Place, London, Richard said: “We're absolutely delighted to win this award after instigating our Green policy only 18 months ago. This proves that the huge efforts made by all of the staff have been recognised well beyond the region.”

“This is particularly appreciated since both the judges and other entrants are among the top practitioners in the country” added Dee.

Battlesteads has invested in a state-of-the-art woodchip burning boiler for heating and hot water with sustainable fuel supplied from local forestry less than 1 mile away. As a spinoff 'waste' heat is used to run a polytunnel growing fresh vegetables and salads for use in the kitchens.

All food used in their restaurant comes from local suppliers within a 20 mile radius and cask ales are from local micro-breweries. A range of recycling, ethical sourcing and wildlife initiatives makes the hotel one of the greenest in the country.

The HRS Hotel Excellence Awards are one of the Best Practice Forum's Business Excellence Awards scheme, and as such are amongst the most prestigious and highly coveted in the tourism and hospitality industry. They recognise outstanding business achievement and are awarded to those who have adopted or adapted best practice in different aspects of their operation.

Battlesteads already have a Gold Award from the Green Tourism Business Scheme and are highly rated in the Alastair Sawday's Ethical Collection and Green Europe Guides.

The HRS Hotel Excellence Awards are held in association with the British Hospitality Association and are supported by the Institute of Hospitality and the Meetings Industry Association.
