Staying at Battlesteads provides a glimpse into the future of sustainable living. Yet owners Richard and Dee Slade are not evangelistic about their green philosophy. Instead, sustainability is intrinsically woven into every aspect of the business. 

From the big stuff – like the carbon-neutral heating and hot water system which serves the entire hotel, and the extensive gardens with two polytunnels which provide fresh fruit and veg for the kitchen throughout the year – to the small stuff, like the locally sourced, natural and organic toiletries in each of the rooms and the use of empty toilet roll cardboard inners for potting seedlings.

The Greenest Hotel in Northumberland

Battlesteads is proud to be the greenest hotel in Northumberland. Of the 173 hotels across the county, it is the only one with a carbon-neutral heating system and one of only two to hold a Gold Award from the Green Tourism Business Scheme.

Richard and Dee take the responsibility associated with this accolade very seriously and act as green ambassadors to the hospitality industry, as well as the wider business community, offering advice and ideas on how to incorporate sustainability into a business.
