An Evening With Stephen Tonkin
Meet Sky at Night Magazine's Steve Tonkin for a night of tall tales and a masterclass in binocular astronomy.
It might end up being a late night so we suggest that stargazers are aged from 14 years and up.
Stephen and the Observatory will have all the equipment you need, but feel free to bring your own binoculars to get the best out of the night.
Stephen's diary is jam-packed full and we've been lucky to book him at such short notice, so call us now to buy your tickets for this once-in-a-blue-moon experience.
Steve Tonkin is a regular contributor to Sky at Night Magazine's monthly Sky guide and author of the Sir Patrick Moore Practical Astronomy Series book titled "Binocular Astronomy". Steve regularly tours the UK and this weekend is visiting the Battlesteads Dark Sky Discovery Site and you are invited. He will be delivering "Binocular Astronomy" and "Ten Ways the Universe Tries to kill you" and weather permitting, leading a session on binocular stargazing on each night.
Ten Ways the Universe Tries to Kill You
From gamma-ray bursts to asteroid impacts, an overview of cataclysmic events. This light-hearted but scientifically robust approach incorporates a lot of fundamental cosmological processes, from stellar evolution to galactic interaction. It is appropriate for both beginning and intermediate amateur astronomers.
Stargazing with Binoculars
Find out how to choose and use binoculars for astronomy: discover what makes a good (or bad!) binocular, distinguish between valuable information and advertising hype, and learn how to optimise your stargazing. There will be a number of binoculars and mounting options for the "hands on" experience.
