No specialist equipment is needed for this event, although if you have a telescope or binoculars you are welcome to bring them.

On this special evening, witness one of the most beautiful pairings in the night sky—the Moon and Saturn in conjunction. As they draw close together in the sky, the view through our telescopes becomes all the more magical, offering a rare chance to observe both celestial bodies in stunning detail side-by-side.

You’ll get the chance to explore the rugged surface of the Moon: its ancient highlands, dark maria, cratered edges and even the sites of the Apollo landings. Saturn will shine nearby, and through the telescope you’ll clearly see its famous rings and several of its moons, while we explain the phases of the rings and what they tell us about Saturn’s orbit and structure.

Weather permitting, we’ll also stargaze more broadly using our 14-inch large aperture telescope, dobsonians, and binoculars to seek out deep sky wonders such as double stars, clusters, and galaxies. You'll receive tips on using stargazing apps, learn about cosmic distances, and gain a deeper appreciation for our place in the solar system and beyond.

During the winter months, our warm room stays cosy, and free hot drinks are available all year round, helping make this one of the most comfortable and rewarding ways to explore the dark skies of Northumberland.

All our events also include the chance to handle and investigate our extensive meteorite collection, which includes pieces of asteroids, the Moon, and planet Mars.
