Christmas at Belsay has always been a special occasion, the Middleton family first moved into the then brand new Hall here at Belsay on Christmas Day in 1817. This weekend you can play with typical toys and many of the popular Victorian table and parlour games. Learn about Prince Albert’s influence in popularising the Christmas tree and find out what its true origins are and also why we use evergreens for decoration, crackers, mince pies, carol singing, pantomimes. You can also shop for unique Christmas gifts and sample English Heritage’s own range of liqueurs and seasonal treats.
11.30am & 2.00pm Victorian Christmas
Learn about Christmases past with Heuristics and find out the origins of traditions we have today. Afterwards you can make a toy for Penny or a Florin – traditional and Victorian inspired toys for children to make and take home.
